The demographic change in Bavaria – as opposed to most of the other federal states – can be felt with a time delay. Southern Bavaria, and here especially the region of Munich, still profi ts from significant immigration, so that the consequences, which result from the ongoing, negative natural population development are “masked”. Easily overseen are often the rather peripheral areas in North- and East Bavaria which suffer from population decline for years and where the consequences of the demographic change are visible today already and massive efforts of politics, administration and civil society are required. The basic problems in Bavaria are comparable with other areas of Germany. Nevertheless an exact evaluation of the affects of the demographic change on individual spatial areas and for individual sub-regions is missing. The work group “Demographic change and spatial development in Bavaria” of the Bavarian work group (ARL) wants to close this research gap. The focal points are as follows: Presentation of the current population development in Bavaria and evaluation of population prognoses Effects of the demographic chance on services of general interest, tourism and retail Regional case studies from Unterfranken and the region of Munich Conclusions about opportunities for action from a communal, regional and nationwide perspective
