In 2002, the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg looks back on its 500-year anniversary and celebrates the founding of the university in the spirit of humanism, marking a "Year of Science" in Halle. In this context, and under the humanistic motto ad fontes - back to the sources - the catalog addresses the dynamic relationship between science and art. Starting from the premise that both discourses play significant roles in experimentation and reality reference, the goal is to create a dialogue and thus a rapprochement between science and art, modeled after the famous art and natural history cabinet in the Historical Orphanage of the Francke Foundations. To achieve this goal, seven fields of knowledge and interest serve as sources and inspiration for seven contemporary artists in their aesthetic engagement with these themes. The catalog provides detailed information about both the sources and the artworks, thereby facilitating a conversation between both aspects and the viewer.
