Video is an omnipresent medium today, yet video theory remains an undeveloped academic discipline. Despite the wealth of publications on photographic, film, and television theory, there is a notable lack of an overview of video theory to support research and teaching. This publication represents the first comprehensive inventory and synthesis of existing disparate theories. The theoretical perspectives presented are drawn from various fields, including media theory, media archaeology, art theory, philosophy, sociology, cultural studies, psychotherapy, ethnology, theatre studies, forensics, social geography, surveillance studies, and gender studies. Organized into twelve thematic chapters, the book offers a transdisciplinary introduction to fifty years of scholarly, artistic, and political reflections on the medium. It features contributions from notable authors such as Barbara Büscher, Martha Buskirk, Peter Sachs Collopy, Dieter Daniels, Marc Ries, and Jan Thoben. The editors, Dieter Daniels and Jan Thoben, have extensive backgrounds in art history, media theory, and sound studies, having collaborated on the project “Transdisciplinary Video Theory” at the Gutenberg Research College in Mainz from October 2017 to February 2020.
