Only a small proportion of the New Zealand population lives in the country. Rural life shapes the nation's character however. Rural New Zealanders have developed a unique lifestyle, which is rare in today's hectic industrial nations. They live in an environmentally-aware, healthy way, in tune with nature and animals. Most farming work is very strenuous, but a carefree life in the open air, free from noise, dirt and stress, evens things up.
