"This monograph on the (dialectal) speech of American Slovaks presents the results of research on the contact and interference phenomena between two unrelated languages. The research demonstrates that Slovak as an isolated minority language in the USA has undergone functional shift, which also reflects its entire cultural it changed from the basic means of communication into a secondary code. The Americanization of the lives of the immigrants also brought about the Americanization of the language. This book is designed for those without whose help it would not have the informants and the remaining Slovak communities in the USA. Therefore, the authors chose a specific manner of publishing their findings. The two relatively independent parts of the monograph (which are written in different languages and are modified from the point of view of form and content) were written with the assumed audience in mind."
