The challenges of human rights protection extend beyond individual states, necessitating a collective commitment from the international community. The traditional sovereign state model is inadequate for addressing these issues. A comprehensive understanding of the relationship between governments and their international obligations is essential for effective human rights strategies. The European Union exemplifies a multi-layered approach to human rights protection, featuring its own human rights catalogue, the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, which aligns with general human rights principles and implementation policies, positioning the EU as a significant player in European human rights. This work focuses on the internal aspects of human rights law within the EU, exploring the historical context of its development and providing a legal analysis of the principles enshrined in the EU Charter. It examines the relationship between these principles, relevant case law, and the international obligations of EU Member States. Additionally, it looks into the constitutional traditions of human rights protection shared by Member States, which lend legitimacy to the Court of Justice's decisions regarding human rights.
