In the late seventeenth century, Robert Kirk, an Episcopalian minister in the Scottish Highlands, sought to gather his parishioners' captivating tales of elves, fairies, fauns, doppelgängers, wraiths, and other beings that he described as "a middle nature betwixt man and angel."
