Although it is widely accepted that Jesus lived in the first century A.D., there is a lack of concrete evidence from contemporary Roman and Jewish historians. The Gospel writers emerged from a later generation, and many Old Testament and Talmudic references suggest the Messiah's arrival was an event that had already taken place. Ahmed Osman presents a compelling argument that Jesus and Joshua are the same individual—a belief shared by early Church Fathers—and identifies this figure as the pharaoh Tutankhamun, who ruled Egypt from 1361 to 1352 B.C. and was viewed as the spiritual son of God. Osman argues that the Essene Christians, who secretly followed Jesus's teachings after his death, only became public after John the Baptist's execution by Herod, centuries later. The Essenes, who preserved the monotheistic traditions of Egypt following the deaths of Tutankhamun and his father Akhenaten (Moses), saw themselves as the people of the New Covenant established with their Lord by the Teacher of Righteousness, who was killed by a corrupt priest. The Dead Sea Scrolls lend support to Osman's assertion that this Teacher of Righteousness was, in fact, Jesus.
