The Middle-Length Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment

Mehr zum Buch

The great Tibetan Buddhist master Tsongkhapa (1357-1419), founder of the Geluk tradition and revered as the supreme interpreter of Buddha's teachings, was a remarkable scholar whose profound understanding attracted many students. In 1402, after extensive retreat and visionary experiences, he authored the Lamrim Chenmo, a comprehensive guide to enlightenment. Twelve years later, he wrote the Middle-Length Treatise on the Stages of the Path, now presented in its first full English translation. This work, while half the length of the Great Treatise, synthesizes the path to enlightenment, beginning with teachings for those of small capacity, advancing through meditations for medium capacity, and culminating with insights for beings of great capacity. The first half condenses the Great Treatise, maintaining its structure while distilling its core messages. The latter section, focused on wisdom and emptiness, introduces original content, particularly regarding conventional and ultimate truth. As a lamrim, it offers meditations on recognizing the rarity of human existence, impermanence, suffering, and the path of bodhisattvas, who aim to liberate all beings. Tsongkhapa provides detailed guidance on śamatha, essential for deep insight into reality. This systematic overview serves as a crucial resource for newcomers to Tibetan Buddhism and offers valuable insights for seasoned practitioners on the journey to awakening.
