This original exploration of Tadao Ando’s work, one of Japan’s foremost architects, delves into both the physical and spiritual realms. In 2012, Philippe Séclier visited Ando’s iconic Church of the Light, sparking a global journey to study the architect’s buildings. This unique presentation is the culmination of a nine-year project to photograph 130 structures. By walking around each building to find the right framing, Séclier gained insight into Ando’s brilliance in siting and composition. Loosely organized chronologically, the work features numerous black and white images of each building, arranged like a mosaic, reflecting Ando’s philosophy of structure and geometry. This "atlas" captures the geographic and thematic diversity of Ando’s oeuvre, showcasing transit stations in Tokyo and Kobe, art museums in Fort Worth and Provence, an artists’ retreat on the Mexican coast, the demolished Piccadilly Gardens in Manchester, a theater in Milan, and an upscale restaurant in New York City. Séclier’s photographs of Ando’s religious structures highlight his masterful use of light and shadow to convey spiritual depth and timelessness, complemented by concise observations of each building. An appendix further details the geographic breadth of Ando’s work.
