Nymphenburg Palace was the summer residence of the sovereigns of Bavaria. Erected starting in 1664 as a luxurious country mansion by Elector Ferdinand Maria and his consort Henriette Adelaide of Savoy, Nymphenburg was extended by Elector Max Emanuel in the early eighteenth century to create a sophisticated Baroque residence. With its extensive park, which was redesigned in the English landscape style after 1804, and with four small palaces in the park – including the Amalienburg, a jewel of Rococo architecture – Nymphenburg is one of Germany’s most important palace complexes.
