In the 1870s, many immigrants from Hedmark, Norway, settled in Concord, Massachusetts, primarily working as farm hands and domestic servants. Among them was Ole Thorpe, a shoe salesman and gifted preacher, who, with the support of the American Trinitarian Congregational Church, organized a new congregation known as the Scandinavian Branch. This group, along with other Norwegian churches from Maine to New Jersey, formed the Eastern Evangelical Free Church Association, which later became part of the Evangelical Free Church of America. The volume chronicles the experiences of these immigrant servants as they strove to assimilate into American society while preserving their ethnic and faith traditions. They built their own church and became independent in 1920, later relocating to Acton, MA, in 1975, and are now preparing to celebrate their centennial as an independent church. The book is structured in three parts: the history of the movement since the 1870s, recognition of key individuals and organizations that supported the church, and an evaluation of the congregation’s successes and failures over the years, including lessons learned. An appendix features short biographies of charter members and significant friends of the church.
