Fragments posthumes d'un ouvrage de Claude Larcher, recueillis et publiés par Paul Bourget, son exécuteur testamentaire. Paul Bourget's artistic development is characterized not by a progression from problem to problem, but by a deeper understanding of a phenomenon: the dual will in humans. If we consider all human knowledge as an understanding of the connections between things, then any point of analysis serves as a nexus of all threads; touching one string resonates with all others. Each expression of an individual's will is intricately linked to every other expression of the same. This reflects a modern interpretation of the old artistic saying: ex ungue leonem. The subtle, uniform atmosphere in which all characters of a novel exist, along with the ethereal mental vibrations emanating from the observer's eye into the depicted states of being, distinguishes even the most perfect, naturalistic artwork from real life. We cannot perceive these vibrations because they originate from our own perspective. This essence, referred to as the soul of the book, reveals the individuality of the author, while the individuality of the portrayed characters is discernible only to the extent that the poet has infused them with elements of his own identity.
