Bob Mizer dedicated 48 years to creating photos and films for his Athletic Model Guild and 41 years publishing Physique Pictorial, America’s first explicitly gay physique magazine. His diaries reveal that he was openly homosexual from his late teens, yet he lived in his mother’s L.A. rooming house until age 42, where a strict ethical code limited his expression. For 24 years, Mizer worked in black and white, avoiding fully nude images. However, after his mother’s death in 1964, he established a vibrant world focused on male beauty, capturing fully nude men in explicit, colorful poses. In the 1970s and ’80s, his compound became a haven for young models, who lived among an eclectic mix of animals and props that appeared in his unique films and photography. Often likened to Hugh Hefner for his groundbreaking magazine, Mizer influenced many, including artist David Hockney and California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, who modeled for him in 1975. This book celebrates Mizer's late-period work with over 250 photos and features an oral history from notable contributors. It also includes a one-hour DVD of Mizer's films from 1958 to 1980, specially edited for this edition. Text is available in English, French, and German.
