Awareness of the significance of surface constitution in understanding material behavior and performance has grown alongside advancements in surface study techniques. Recent years have seen important developments in analytical tools and methods, suggesting numerous avenues for further investigation. A conference on "Surfaces and Interfaces of Glass and Ceramics" was held at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in August 1973, sponsored by the U.S. Army Research Office, Durham, and NASA. This event was the tenth in a series hosted by various universities, including North Carolina State University and the University of California at Berkeley. The chapters are organized by emphasis, starting with analytical methods. Subsequent chapters address friction and wear, which are crucial for efficient energy use in finishing processes and preventing premature failure due to frictional damage. Surface reactions are also examined, particularly concerning physiological interactions with ceramics intended for prosthetic applications. Additionally, the discussion includes material-material interfaces and transition zones, illustrated by examples such as grain boundaries in ceramics and interfaces across solid, liquid, and gaseous phases.
