Julia Bird is excited for the annual village party at Berrywick House, featuring tea tents, cake stalls, and a maze. However, the festivities take a dark turn when she discovers a dead body in the maze. Ursula Benjamin, a well-known and prickly participant in the baking competition, has been strangled, and the killer must be someone at the fete. Julia, a notorious figure in the community, is determined to investigate the murder herself, suspecting that the competitive bakers might have taken the contest too far or that Ursula's personal life held darker secrets. As Julia delves deeper into the mystery, another death occurs, raising the stakes and indicating that the murders are connected. With the village's wholesome spirit at risk, Julia is resolved to uncover the killer's identity and prevent further chaos. Fans of gripping English mysteries will enjoy this tale filled with rural charm and intriguing twists. Readers have praised Julia Bird as a lovable character and the story as addictive, reminiscent of Agatha Christie, making it a delightful addition to the mystery genre.
