Michel Majerus became known for his skillful ”sampling” of a rich repertoire of various painting styles and visual spheres from diverse contexts. On one hand, Majerus’s approach to painting is influenced by images outside of the fine arts: comics, advertising, pornography, and music videos; on the other, he is influenced by recognized artists such as Frank Stella, Gerhard Richter, Georg Baselitz, and others.

Composing with the Game Boy The Luxembourgish painter Michel Majerus (1967–2002) was one of the first artists who conceived his works in Adobe Photoshop. He used the software to sample figures and typography from videogames and advertising graphics. He also borrowed from more recent art history, and especially from the oeuvre of the master of Pop art, Andy Warhol. Starting in 1996, Majerus made works for which he used off-the-shelf aluminum panels as support media, combining them in relief-like wall pictures and installations. He also shifted from the manual application of paint on the canvas to silkscreen printing, a change of technique that irreversibly altered the trajectory of his creative development. This book offers the first comprehensive documentation of the ensemble, complemented by conversations of the author Jan Tumlir with the artists Jorge Pardo, Laura Owens, and Jordan Wolfson about Majerus’s art.

Seine Arbeiten integrieren Figuren aus Computerspielen wie Super Mario, ein Porträt von Marilyn Manson und verfremdete Logos großer Unternehmen, kombiniert mit expressiven Pinselstrichen, die an Willem de Kooning erinnern. Am 24. April 1998 schuf er eine Serie von achtzig Zeichnungen in der seltenen Technik der Sepiatusche auf Papier, die er mit ironischer Distanz als klassisches Medium einsetzte. Diese Papierarbeiten sind originale Zeichnungen und fungieren als enzyklopädisches Verzeichnis seines charakteristischen Bildvokabulars. In diesem Buch wird die Serie Printer’s Proof erstmals veröffentlicht und in Texten von Christian Rattemeyer und Lucien Kayser ausführlich diskutiert.
