Seit den 1980er-Jahren wird die Frage nach der aktuellen Kunst Italiens diskutiert, die größtenteils noch immer ein Desiderat der Forschung und globalen Ausstellungslandschaft darstellt. Die Publikation gibt anhand ausgewählter Werke aus der Sammlung Schaufler einen Überblick über die italienische Gegenwartskunst. Im Mittelpunkt stehen historische, fiktive, visuelle und thematische Begegnungen italienischer Künstler mit Zeitgenossen, die in prägnanten Positionen zusammengefasst und nach Aspekten wie Raum, Design, Farbe, Material oder Fotografie gruppiert werden. Welche Bedeutung kommt der zeitgenössischen Kunst Italiens etwa im Kontext von Galerien und Museen und insbesondere bei der Biennale di Venezia und der Documenta zu? Parallelen zu anderen Strömungen und Unterscheidungsmerkmale sowie die Relevanz des italienischen Kunstschaffens für die internationale Kunstentwicklung seit den 1950er-Jahren werden sichtbar.
