Námětem románu Williama Gladstonea 12 je dávné mayské proroctví o tom, že 21. prosince roku 2012 přijde konec světa, konec jedné civilizační éry. Podobný motiv se v literatuře i filmu objevil nejednou, ale Gladstone se rozhodl přistoupit k němu poněkud osobitějším způsobem. V románu sledujeme životní pouť Maxe, který již od narození vykazoval velmi prazvláštní rysy. Například až do šesti let nemluvil, ale potom se zničehonic rozpovídal a již v tomto věku dokázal formulovat velmi složité myšlenky.
