Geboren am 9.9.1828 in Jasnaja Poljana (Gouvernement Tula), gestorben am 20.11.1910 in Astapowo (Gouvernement Kaluga), begraben im Park von Jasnaja Poljana. Als Student wollte Tolstoi auf seinem Gut das Elend der Bauern mildern, stieß jedoch nur auf Mißtrauen und Undankbarkeit. Er floh in die Armee, wo er während des Krimkrieges zu schreiben begann. Tolstoi kannte die Familie Behrs seit langem, war nacheinander in die Mutter und dann in jede der drei Töchter verliebt gewesen, bis er sich für die zweite Tochter entschied, Sofja Andrejewna. Ohne sie gäbe es weder ›Krieg und Frieden‹ noch ›Anna Karenina‹: Sie spornte ihn an und gab ihrem Mann während über zehn Jahren den für seine Arbeit nötigen inneren Frieden. Der dann plötzlich zerbrach: 'Ich war keine 50 Jahre alt, ich liebte, ich wurde geliebt, ich hatte gute Kinder, ein großes Gut, Ruhm, sittliche und körperliche Kraft. Plötzlich stockte mein Leben' – ihm war die Sinnlosigkeit desselben aufgegangen. Tolstoi kleidete sich wie ein Bauer und wurde Prediger und Moralist. Seine Frau hatte den Grafen Tolstoi geheiratet, nicht einen Bauern: die Ehe wurde zur Hölle. Mit 82 Jahren riß er eines Nachts aus und starb nach 10 Tagen in der kleinen Bahnstation Astapowo.
