Stan Smith (1929-2001) verfolgte eine angesehene Karriere als Maler, Autor und Lehrer, nachdem er an der St Albans School of Art und dem Royal College of Art ausgebildet worden war. Seine umfangreiche Lehrtätigkeit umfasste Stationen am London College of Printing und am Royal College of Art. Seine akademische Laufbahn gipfelte in der Leitung der Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art in Oxford, wo er seit 1979 unterrichtete.
