Samuel de Champlain kann als Gründer von Neufrankreich und als dessen erster Gouverneur bezeichnet werden, obwohl er diesen Titel nie führte. Vor allem in Kanada wird sein Vermächtnis mit der Bezeichnung »Le père de la nouvelle France« geehrt. 1603 unternahm er seine erste Reise in das heutige Kanada als Teilnehmer einer Pelzhandelsmission. Er war den St.-Lorenz-Strom aufwärts gefahren und zeichnete eine Karte des Seengebiets nach indianischen Auskünften. Infolge weiterer Missionen als Leutnant mehrerer Vizekönige von Neufrankreich veranlasste Champlain 1608 die Gründung von Quèbec. Auf der Seite huronischer Indianerstämme kämpfte er mit den Irokesen und der englischen Kolonialmacht, die Quèbec auch für kurze Zeit kontrollierte.
