Die spektakulären Inszenierungsformen von Kultbildern in italienischen und spanischen Kirchen des 17. Jahrhunderts stehen im Mittelpunkt dieser Untersuchung. An bestimmten Festtagen wurden Altargemälde rituell enthüllt, was als wundersame Erscheinung galt. Der Band analysiert die Entwicklung, Funktion und Verbreitung dieser Praxis und bietet durch einen transkulturellen Ansatz neue Einsichten in die Rolle von Bildmedien im religiösen Kult. Dies trägt entscheidend zur Erforschung von Kultbildern und deren Bedeutung in der damaligen Gesellschaft bei.

This volume brings together the papers delivered at the international conference Paragone. Leonardo in Context, held in July 2019 at the University of Leipzig, as well as an additional essay by Martin Kemp on Leonardo’s sfumato. For this publication, the original conference title was slightly modified to Paragone. Leonardo in Comparison, in order to do justice to the comparative character of the studies it presents and the importance of comparison as a methodological paradigm. A discussion of this is found in the introduction, which at the same time seeks, by way of example, to apply the comparative paradigm to currently the most contentious issue in Leonardo the artist’s design for a Christ as Salvator Mundi.
