Die amerikanische Künstlerin Cindy Sherman gehört seit Jahrzehnten zu den wichtigsten und einflussreichsten Akteuren der Kunstwelt. In ihren Fotografien inszeniert sie sich ausschliesslich selbst. Perfekt maskiert, verkleidet und geschminkt verkörpert sie die unterschiedlichsten Charaktere, nimmt unterschiedliche Identitäten an. Zu Shermans wichtigsten Serien zählt 'Untitled Film Stills' (1977-1980); in den 70 Schwarzweiß-Fotografien inszeniert sich Sherman selbst als Modell in fiktiven Filmszenen. Des Weiteren hat sich Sherman über ihre ganze Karriere hinweg mit der Modeindustrie beschäftigt, mit deren Abgründen und dem stereotypen Bild von Weiblichkeit, aber auch mit der hohen Kunst der High Fashion. Die umfangreich illustrierte "Du"-Ausgabe zeigt Werke aus dieser Seite ihres Werkes, wie auch aus den Serien 'Untitled Film Stills' und den 'History Portraits' (1988-1990), in denen sich die Künstlerin als historische Figuren im Stil der alten Meister darstellt. Das Magazin enthält zudem Fotografien Shermans neuester Arbeit 'New Faces' aus dem Jahr 2023. In ihr setzt die Künstlerin und Fotografin mit digitaler Collagetechnik Gesichter neu zusammen.Shermans Werke sind bis zum 10. September 2023 in der Staatsgalerie Stuttgart in der Ausstellung 'Cindy Sherman - Anti-Fashion' zu sehen, vom 7. Oktober 2023 bis zum 28. Januar 2024 in den Deichtorhallen Hamburg und vom 27. September 2024 bis zum 2. Februar 2025 im Fomu - Fotomuseum Antwerpen. In Zürich zeigt die Galerie Hauser & Wirth noch bis am 16. September 2023 Shermans Arbeit 'New Faces'.
