L'ideologia del multiculturalismo ha una teoria assai riduttiva del riconoscimento delle diversità/differenze culturali, che a sua volta rimanda a modi riduttivi di intendere le stesse differenze culturali. Per esempio, il multiculturalismo riconosce il diritto a parlare la propria lingua, perché ritiene che parlare una lingua significhi appartenere a un altro mondo, e che i mondi linguistici siano "intraducibili", il che può essere vero per molti aspetti, ma in ogni caso produce due effetti negativi. Primo, rinuncia a fare uno sforzo per far accedere tutte le persone, quale che sia la loro lingua, a quei servizi essenziali che richiedono solo un minimo di conoscenze linguistiche per essere fruiti; secondo, sottovaluta il fatto che quando si tratta di risolvere dei problemi nella vita pratica esiste una ragione prelinguistica che può mettere in sintonia le persone, come quando si tratta di darsi una mano per soccorrere una persona in difficoltà. Il saggio vuole mettere in luce i limiti delle attuali semantiche del riconoscimento attraverso cui vengono definite e trattate le differenze culturali, per esplorare un'ipotesi: per creare una reale comunicazione interculturale occorre incoraggiare un modo di guardare alle differenze che sia capace di riconoscere nell'altro la comune umanità. Questo è il compito della ragione relazionale.
