This collection of examples of the application of quantum chemical methods in the study of various chemical problems (main ly in organic chemistry) arose from an arrangement of the ma terials used by the first of the authors in his lectures on organic quantum chemistry and chemical constitution, delivered since 1959 at the Science Department of the Charles University, as well as in courses of quantum chemistry and, finally, in his lectures on the fundamentals of quantum chemistry held in the years 1965-1967 at the universities of Wiirzburg, Groningen, and Giessen, and at the Technical University of Darmstadt. This collection is to be regarded as a supplement to exist ing textbooks on organic quantum chemistry. Whereas the situa tion is satisfactory as far as the number and the standard of text books and monographs in this field are concerned, this cannot be 1 4 said of the collections of examples. Although in some books - a certain number of examples are presented, we believe, in view of the great importance of numerical calculations, that a separate publication of examples would be useful. A similar subject has 5 been dealt with in the recently published book by A. and 0. Julg and in the first part of a trilogy to be published by Heilbronner 6 and Bock.

Nový fotografický atlas šestinožci navazuje na Zahradníkův atlas Brouci. Celkem je v knize pojednáno 360 druhů hmyzu na 407 barevných fotografiích. Vzhledem ke kvalitě odborného textu i fotografií má kniha parametry jak pro studenty oborů zaměřených na ekologii, zemědělství i ochranu přírody, tak i pro zájemce o říši hmyzu všeobecně.

Käfer sind unsere ständigen Nachbarn. Manche kommen von den Tiefebenen bis in die Gebirge vor, viele Arten geben Wäldern den Vorzug, andere gedeihen auf Wiesen, in Gärten und Parks. Käfer sind auch in und auf Gewässern anzutreffen und man kann sie sogar an Orten finden, wo man sie gar nicht erwartet. Manche sind in punkto Beschaffenheit ihres Lebensraums ausgesprochen wählerisch, vielen ist aber das Gepräge der Landschaft einerlei, solange sie genügend Nahrung bietet. Käfer leben sogar mitten unter uns als unsere Hausgenossen. In den Landschaften Mitteleuropas gibt es etwa siebentausend Käferarten. Vielen begegnet man auf Spaziergängen oder Streifzügen durch Wald und Feld, anderen muss man in ihre ganz spezifische Umwelt nachgehen. Will man Käfer finden, muss man sich ein wenig mit ihrem Aussehen und vor allem ihrer Lebensweise bekannt machen. Dabei soll dieses Buch behilflich sein. Der anerkannte Fachautor beschreibt in diesem Werk über 500 Arten, die alle auf Farbfotos gezeigt werden. Er schildert ihre Lebensweise, Entwicklung und Verbreitung. Seine Aufmerksamkeit gilt dabei sowohl den gängigen und auffälligen Arten, als auch den seltenen, die unter Naturschutz stehen.

V jedné z posledních knih se významný entomolog doc. RNDr. Jiří Zahradník, CSc. vyznává ze své lásky k oboru a představuje čtenářům brouky v různých prostředích jejich života. V hnízdech vos a včel, pod kůrou, v houbách či v lidských sídlech i jinde. Zvláštní pozornost věnuje zajímavému životu slunéček, tesaříků, střevlíků, krasců, světlušek, ale i kůrovců a červotočů atd. Vysvětluje a na názorných příkladech ukazuje sexuální dichroismus brouků, rodičovskou péči o potomstvo nebo záslužnou činnost hrobaříků aj. V neposlední řadě seznamuje laickou veřejnost s tím, jak vznikala broučí jména a závěrem přidává několik svých zážitků ze života entomologa.
