Tschingis Aitmatow arbeitete als Veterinärmediziner auf dem Experimentiergut des Viehzuchtforschungsinstituts von Kirgisien. Er hatte bereits einige kleinere Erzählungen veröffentlicht und absolvierte 1956 ein Praktikum am Maxim Gorki-Literaturinstitut in Moskau. Als Diplomarbeit verfasste er eine Geschichte, gab ihr den Titel 'Dshamilja', und seither geht sie um die ganze Welt.
