Vier eeuwen geleden verkreeg de Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie (VOC) het monopolie op de vaart naar Azië en werd het grootste scheepvaart- en handelsbedrijf ter wereld in de 17de en 18de eeuw. De handel in specerijen zoals peper en kaneel, en later ook in zijde, thee en porselein, bracht Nederland een ongekende economische en culturele bloei. Ter gelegenheid van het VOC-jubileumjaar 2002 verschijnt een rijk geïllustreerde editie van de geschiedenis van de VOC door Femme Gaastra. De auteur behandelt alle facetten van dit unieke bedrijf, waaronder de politieke macht die aan een commercieel bedrijf werd verleend, de gekozen bestuursvorm, en de financiering en bouw van schepen. Ook wordt ingegaan op de bijna 5.000 reizen naar de Oost en de redenen waarom tienduizenden Europeanen vrijwillig voor de VOC kozen, ondanks de ontberingen en risico's. De arbeidsomstandigheden aan boord en de militaire ondersteuning worden eveneens belicht.
