Nach den etwas schwächeren Romanen "Die volle Wahrheit" und "Der Zeitdieb" zeigt Terry Pratchett mit diesem Werk wieder große Form. Langjährige Fans der Scheibenwelt werden sich freuen, viele bekannte Figuren in jüngerer Gestalt zu sehen. Die teilweise ernste Grundstimmung verleiht dem Roman zusätzlich Überzeugungskraft. Besonders gelungen ist der Umschlag, der Rembrandts "Nachtwache" parodistisch von Paul Kidby neu interpretiert.
