Jeremiah Burroughs Bücher

Jeremiah Burroughs is worthily reckoned as belonging to the front rank of English puritan preachers. As such he played a prominent part in the Westminster Assembly of divines, but died prematurely before the Assembly's work was concluded. Burrough's writings, some published before and others after his death, were numerous, but The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment is one of the most valuable of them all. Its author was much concerned to promote (1) peace among believers of various 'persuasions' (2) peace and contentment in the hearts of individual believers during what he describes as 'sad and sinking times'. The Rare Jewel concentrates upon this second aim. It is marked by sanity, clarity, aptness of illustration, and warmth of appeal to the heart. 'There is an ark that you may come into, and no men in the world may live such comfortable, cheerful and contented lives as the saints of God'. Burroughs presses his lesson home with all the fervour and cogency of a true and faithful minister of God.

Why is it difficult to be content when you have so much? On the surface, it seems unnecessary to instruct someone to be content in times of prosperity. However, times of prosperity and abundance provide some of the strongest temptations to pull our hearts away from God. Jeremiah Burroughs was keenly aware that the riches of this world compete for our affections and challenge our contentment in Christ. Originally prepared as an appendix to The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment, this book provides an important conclusion to Burroughs's sermon series on Philippians 4:11 12: "I have learned in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.

Některá díla tohoto Puritána byly publikovány již za jeho života, jiné až po jeho smrti. Kniha s názvem Vzácný klenot křesťanské spokojenosti však patří mezi nejvýznamnější Burroughsova díla vůbec. Autor podporuje věřící napříč protestantskými denominacemi ke vzájemnému smíru navzdory odlišným přesvědčením. Především se však snaží ukázat cestu k pokoji a spokojenosti v obtížných a nelehkých dobách. Burroughs obrací pozornost na Boha a záchranu, která je v Něm. Díky tomu mohou křesťané žít ty nejspokojenější a nejradostnější životy ze všech. Jedná se o jedinečné dílo, které již několik staletí přináší věřícím nesmírné povzbuzení a útěchu. Jeremiah Burroughs (1599–1646) byl známý anglický puritánský kazatel. Harmonicky se v něm spojily dvě zdánlivě vylučující se vlastnosti – horlivost pro čistotu učení a uctívání spolu s pokojným duchem toužícím po tom, aby křesťané drželi při sobě. „Burroughsovo dílo je vynikající ukázkou pastorační teologie puritánů. Již samotný název knihy probouzí naši představivost a podněcuje mysl: Spokojenost se podobá klenotu, kterého bychom si měli nanejvýš vážit; tento klenot je ale zároveň vzácný, a tudíž bychom po něm měli usilovně pátrat.“ – Sinclair B.
