Tankard begann schon in jungen Jahren mit Schreiben und Illustrieren, wobei seine frühen Werke von Einfachheit und Humor geprägt waren. Nach dem Studium der Illustration und Grafik widmete er sich der kommerziellen Illustration, bevor er sich seiner wahren Leidenschaft, dem Geschichtenerzählen, zuwandte.
