Vivian Barz wuchs auf einer Farm in einer kleinen Stadt in Nordkalifornien auf, wo ihre Fantasie freien Lauf hatte und sie schon in jungen Jahren begann, Kriminalgeschichten zu schreiben. Eines ihrer frühesten Werke, eine Geschichte über eine magische Vogelscheuche mit einer Vorliebe für Kinderblut, wurde ihrer dritten Klasse vorgelesen. Sie studierte später Englisch sowie Film- und Medienwissenschaften. Heute lebt sie in Los Angeles, wo sie ständig an ihren Drehbüchern und Romanen arbeitet. Barz schreibt auch unter dem Pseudonym Sloan Archer.
