Leopold Ritter von Sacher-Masoch (1836-1895) war nach dem Jurastudium Professor für Geschichte in Lemberg und Redakteur in Budapest. Er veröffentlichte zahlreiche Romane und Novellen, in denen mit liebevoller Genauigkeit das Leben der Bauern und Kleinbürger seiner polnisch-jüdischen Heimat geschildert ist. Der Nachwelt blieb sein Name jedoch nur im Zusammenhang mit dem 1870 erschienenen Liebesroman "Venus im Pelz" in Erinnerung, der von den Wonnen des Leidens handelt. - Die unserer Ausgabe des skandalumwitterten Buches beigegebenen Illustrationen zum Thema "Masochismus" entstammen dem "Bilderlexikon der Erotik", Wien 1929; die Zeichnungen zum kleinen Briefroman "Die Liebe des Plato" wurden von Franz Bayros für eine bibliophile Ausgabe geschaffen.
