José Carlos Mariátegui war ein peruanischer Journalist, politischer Philosoph und Aktivist, dessen einflussreiches Werk das sozialistische Denken in Lateinamerika maßgeblich prägte. Als autodidaktischer Marxist, der vor seinem frühen Tod wirkte, betonte er die Notwendigkeit einer organischen Entwicklung der sozialistischen Revolution, die auf lokalen Bedingungen und Praktiken basiert und nicht auf der mechanischen Anwendung europäischer Formeln. Mariátegui setzte sich dafür ein, dass sich die lateinamerikanische Gesellschaft auf der Grundlage ihrer eigenen Traditionen und Erfahrungen entwickeln sollte.
