Salvador Dalí schuf in den Jahren 1963–65 eine groß angelegte Bibelillustration, die als „Biblia Sacra“ bekannt wurde. Sie besteht aus 62 Illustrationen zum Alten und 43 zum Neuen Testament und stellt mit 105 Druckgrafiken den umfangreichsten Zyklus in Dalís Schaffen überhaupt dar. Sie gehört nicht zuletzt aufgrund der künstlerisch-konzeptionellen Qualität zu seinen Hauptwerken und ist als Jahrhundertwerk zu verstehen. Die Illustrationen zeigen eine oft verborgene Seite des surrealistischen Künstlers. Sie bilden eine völlig eigenständige, farbexplosive Auslegung der biblischen Texte und bieten die konsequenteste und wohl auch ernsthafteste Auseinandersetzung mit der christlichen Religion, die Dalí hinterlassen hat.

Louis Pauwels spędził wiele dni w domu Dalego w Port-Lligat. Rozmawiał z artystą, słuchał i obserwował go przy pracy. Niniejsza książka jest owocem tych spotkań. Przybliża ona poglądy Dalego, pozwala zasmakować w bogactwie jego wyobraźni, uczestniczyć w procesie autokreacji "wybawiciela sztuki współczesnej”. Dali był człowiekiem pełnym sprzeczności z niebywałą skłonnością do mistyfikacji i prowokacji.
