Zaraďujeme sem udalosti, ku ktorým dochádza, keď človek zomiera alebo je už klinicky mŕtvy. Ako prvý ich opísal Raymond A. Moody v priekopníckej knihe Život po živote (Life After Life, 1975, slovenský preklad Štefana Kočiša vyšiel niekoľkých vydaniach). Odvtedy tento jav podobne preskúmali ďalší lekári a bádatelia.
Neexistuje všeobecne prijímaná definícia zážitku na prahu smrti. Vo výskume Jeffreyho Longa odborníci osobitne definovali samotný stav blízko smrti a osobitne jednotlivé zložky sprievodného zážitku. Za osoby "blízko smrti" pokladá autor ľudí, ktorých ktorých fyzický stav by sa bol skončil smrťou, keby sa v dôsledku rôznych okolností rýchlo nezlepšil.
