Brassaï arrived in Paris in 1924 to pursue painting, but his nocturnal wanderings with fellow artists transformed him into a photographer, guided by André Kertész, the first to capture night scenes. His 1932 album, Paris de nuit, catapulted him to fame, leading to collaborations with the surrealist magazine Le Minotaure and encounters with Picasso, whose sculptures he photographed at Boisgeloup. Roger Grenier, who spent his youth in Pau, met Gilberte, Brassaï's future wife. As a journalist in post-Liberation Paris, he helped her connect with the photographer in 1945. The bond between Grenier and Brassaï deepened over the years, lasting until Brassaï's death. Grenier reflects on their thirty-three years of friendship, noting that Brassaï found a new family with them. He recalls marrying Brassaï and later burying him at Montparnasse Cemetery. The extensive letters and postcards Brassaï sent to Grenier reveal the travels and projects of this renowned photographer, who worked on books about illustrious friends like Picasso and Henry Miller, completed the edition of Paris secret from the 1930s, and ventured into sculpture. This unpublished correspondence offers an unfiltered portrait of one of the 20th century's greatest photographers.

Un homme bafoué par tous cherche quelle revanche il pourrait prendre, au terme d'une vie silencieuse.
