Der protestantische Theologe Bernhard Duhm (1847 - 1928) war einer der bedeutendsten und einflussreichsten Alttestamentler seiner Zeit. Er war "ein Vertreter der sogenannten Religionsgeschichtlichen Schule. Noch heute wegweisend sind seine Beiträge zur Prophetenforschung, die versuchen, aus den Besonderheiten der einzelnen Propheten eine Entwicklungsgeschichte der israelitischen Religion zu gewinnen." Frucht dieser Forschung ist u. a. das hier vorliegende Werk: "Die nachfolgenden Untersuchungen über diejenige Entwicklungsperiode der israelitischen Religion, die sich an den Namen der Propheten knüpfen, sind induktiver, nicht didaktischer Natur; sie gehen also nicht von irgendwelchen theologischen oder religionsphilosophischen Voraussetzungen über die israelitische Religion und ihre Entwicklung aus, sondern wollen vielmehr die richtige Einsicht in dieselbe erst finden und begründen helfen."
