They are, in some respects, the most important of all his writings, as they give, in con nected form, his matured views of the relation of the two great divisions of the Bible. No preacher or writer of our day had such a clear insight into the spirit and connection of the sacred writings. This was the great charm of his preaching, which made it so attractive to many earnest-minded Christians of all churches. It was full of instruc tion, because it brought out the deep meaning, quite apparent when indicated, - for his interpretations were not fanciful, but real, - of the symbols and prophecies of the Old Testament, as well as of the narratives and sayings of the New.
