Une prière américaine n'avait été publiée aux Etats-Unis qu'en plaquette tirée à 200 exemplaires uniquement réservés aux amis de Morrison. Ode à L.A. en songeant à feu Brian Jones est un écrit plus rare encore puisqu'il n'avait circulé que sous la forme d'une feuille imprimée, distribuée au public lors de concerts des Doors en 1969. Enfin, le texte qui termine ce recueil fut publié en 1968 dans la revue américaine Eye.

Americká noc je druhým svazkem Morrisonovy poezie a textů posmrtně vydaných nakladatelstvím Villard Books. Materiál obsažený v této knize pochází především z deníků, zápisníků, rukopisů a nezařazených, ručně psaných listů, které Morrison zanechal v péči své manželky Pamely v době své smrti v roce 1971 v Paříži.
