Tarotkarten haben ihren Ursprung in der Renaissance um 1450 und wurden zunächst für italienische Fürstenhäuser handgemalt. Ein Deck besteht aus 78 Karten, darunter 22 große Arkanen und 56 kleine Arkanen. Arthur Edward Waite ließ die Karten mit Bildern versehen, die von Pamela Colman Smith gestaltet wurden, und nutzte Symbolik zur Deutung.
