The Birthday of the Infanta by Oscar Wilde. Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde (1854–1900) was an Irish author, playwright and poet. After writing in different forms throughout the 1880s, he became one of London's most popular playwrights in the early 1890s. Today he is remembered for his epigrams, his novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, his plays, as well as the circumstances of his imprisonment and early death."The Birthday of the Infanta" is a historical fiction short story for children by the Irish author Oscar Wilde. It was first published in the 1891 anthology House of Pomegranates, which also includes "The Young King', "The Fisherman and his Soul" and "The Star-Child".The action of "The Birthday of the Infanta" takes place in Spain at an unspecified point in the past. It is the twelfth birthday of the Infanta, the only daughter, and only child, of the King of Spain. For her entertainment, an ugly young dwarf dancer is brought to the court. The Dwarf is completely unaware of how hideous he looks and does not realize that the reason that others laugh in his presence is because they are mocking his appearance. When the Dwarf sees his own reflection for the first time in his life, the consequences are severe.

His dream worlds of nonsensical Wonderland and the back-to-front 'Looking Glass kingdom' depict order turned upside-down: a baby turns into a pig, time is abandoned at a disorderly tea-party and a chaotic game of chess makes a seven-year-old girl a Queen. But amongst the anarchic humour and sparkling word play, puzzles and riddles, are poignant moments of nostalgia for lost childhood

Tisíc a jedna noc je zbierka orientálnych príbehov, ktorá sa stala súčasťou svetovej literatúry a inšpirovala mnohých slávnych autorov, hudobníkov a výtvarníkov. Arabský text je najznámejší, no len málo prekladateľom sa podarilo preložiť ho celý. Ak by sme chceli navštíviť miesta, kde vznikli tieto známe rozprávky, museli by sme sa vydať na dlhú karavánovú cestu do Indie, odkiaľ pochádza úvodná rozprávka o múdrej Šahrazáde a krutom kráľovi Šahrijárovi. Kráľovná si vykupuje život zaujímavými príbehmi, pričom jej rozprávanie trvá tisíc a jednu noc, čím udržiava kráľovu pozornosť. V ďalších príbehoch, ako je Rozprávka o kupcovi a džinovi, traja starci zachraňujú nešťastného kupca svojimi rozprávkami. V Rozprávaní o nosičovi a troch devách bojujú o život traja žobraví derviši, pričom aj v Rozprávaní o krajčírovi a ďalších postavách musia hrdinovia vyrozprávať zaujímavé príhody, aby sa vyhli smrti. Príbehy sú podávané anonymnými rozprávačmi tak presvedčivo, že čitateľa uchváti imaginárny svet, kde sa odráža myšlienka: „Ušetri ma a aj Boh ťa ušetrí!“ alebo „Neublíž mi a ani Boh nedovolí, aby ti ublížili!“ Texty sú doplnené sugestívnymi ilustráciami Karola Ondreičku.
