The story begins in 1866 when reports emerge in English newspapers about a colossal sea creature attacking ships, capturing the attention of scientists. Some believe it to be a submarine, while others assert it is an unknown creature. In response, the Americans dispatch the frigate Abraham Lincoln to uncover the mystery. Among the expedition members is French naturalist Professor Aronnax, accompanied by his servant Conseil, who meet harpooner Ned Land aboard the ship. Začíná přituhovat. Iron Man se zamiloval, Hulk má být popraven za masakr v New Yorku, Thor si založil sektu, Giant-Man se spouští se skupinou druhořadých superhridnů, Wasp začíná chápat, že chodit s Captainem Americou, který si víc rozumí s lidmi kolem osmdesátky, nebude žádná sranda... a navíc je v týmu zrádce, který vynáší tajné informace. A to je jen rozjezd. Uplynul už rok od zastavení mimozemské invaze a první americký superhrdinský tým zase už zaplňuje pouze stránky bulváru. Kdo se rozvedl, kdo se oženil, kdo s kým chodí, kdo se zbláznil, prostě nic extra zajímavého – aspoň do chvíle, než se provalí, že Hulk, který zničil polovinu New Yorku, je ve skutečnosti člen Ultimates Bruce Banner… a brzo taky prvním superhrdinou, který dostane trest smrti. Komiks míchá cool scény a monumentální souboje s temnou a cynickou vizí nejslavnějších superhrdinů světa. V první knize se hrdinové střetli se svým vlastním kolegou, v druhé už konečně přichází to, co tak potřebovali – protivníci. Na Zemi zaútočí mimozemská rasa – a do týmu přichází noví členové: Bleskový Quicksilver a magická Scarlet Witch (jejichž vztah není zřejmě jen sourozenecký), střelec Hawkey a tajemná Black Widow.

Jeden z nejzábavnějších superhrdinských komiksů poslední doby, komiks Ultimates - temnější a cyničtější verze marvelovských Avengers. Najdete tam všechny slavné hrdiny: Iron Mana, Hulka, Captaina Americu, Thora a další, jen v modernějším kabátě. Americká vláda chce supervojáky, jenže jediné, co se podařilo vytvořit, je zelený magor, který pobíhá po New Yorku a žere lidi. Naštěstí se v ledovci najde prastarý hrdina... a pár dalších borců se dá koupit nebo uplatit. Chybí jen jedno. Nějaký protivník, se kterým by mohli (v přestávkách mezi učinkováním v televizi a focením se pro noviny) bojovat. Mark Millar (Mrtvý nebo živý) mixuje ironický pohled na svět superhrdinů s monumentální akcí - a Bryan Hitch to dokáže perfektně zvěčnit na stránce. Takže si to nenechte ujít.
