Příběh vypráví šestnáctiletý Axel a začíná v neděli 24. května roku 1863, kdy profesor Lidenbrock objeví dokument islandského alchymisty ze 16. století Arneho Saknussemma. Text psaný runovým písmem rozluští a zjistí, že Saknussemm v dokumentu tvrdí, že sestoupil do středu Země.
