Maria Luisa Meoni has studied Ambrogio Lorenzetti's Good Government from the point of view of an anthropologist. And how wonderful this anthropology is, for not only does it contribute to the interpretation of a utopia and dream of civility, introducing us to the very world where both were conceived in symbols and images, but the comments, notes and visual references also enrich the interpretation of this wonderful painting by deducing as much as possible from it. It is indeed a vision of a harmonious ideal which glorifies the Father on the one hand and Siena, which is dedicated to Him, on the other. Yet it is, even more, a vision of mankind who, in his laborious impermanence, continually inhabits the eternity of this ideal. However - and Maria Luisa Meoni's vivid obeservations are truly splendid in ter precision en subtlety - this visionary universe is composed of real need, effort and human patience.
