Diese erstmals 1933 veröffentlichte Arbeit ist ein Grund- und Begründungstext soziographischer Forschung. Ihr Ziel war es, mit den Mitteln moderner Erhebungsmethoden ein Bild von der psychologischen Situation einer Arbeitslosenpopulation (Marienthal in Niederösterreich) zu gewinnen. Zwei Aufgaben mußten gelöst werden — eine inhaltliche: zum Problem der Arbeitslosigkeit Material beizutragen, und eine methodische: einen sozialpsychologischen Tatbestand umfassend darzustellen. Die Forschungsgruppe hat sich, nach einer längeren Vorbereitungsphase, einige Wochen in Marienthal aufgehalten. Das dort gesammelte Material (Ergebnisse von Interviews, Berichte von Betroffenen und Gemeindefunktionären, Tagebuchnotizen, Briefe, Beobachtungsprotokolle, statistische Daten) wurde in gemeinsamen Arbeitssitzungen der Forscher gesichtet, ausgewertet, analysiert. So entstand schließlich ein im großen und ganzen paradigmatisches Untersuchungsbild von konzentrierter Arbeitslosigkeit, ihren wirtschaftlichen, psychischen und sozialen Folgephänomenen, dessen Hauptmerkmale nach wie vor aufschlußreich sind für empirische Sozialforschung auf diesem Feld.

Nezaměstnanost je naléhavým problémem dnešní doby. Má sociální, ekonomické, psychologické i zdravotní důsledky. Kniha prezentuje první velký výzkum k tomuto tématu. Patří ke klasické moderní sociálně vědecké analýze, metodicky a obsahově má příkladný význam i pro dnešní výzkum nezaměstnanosti. V terénním výzkumu byly využity kvalitativní i kvantitativní metody s cílem zachytit komplexní způsoby prožívání ztráty práce dělníků v obci Marienthal, poblíž Vídně. Použitá metoda zúčastněného pozorování je jednou z nejvýznamnějších metod etnografie. Studie podává komplexní popis psychosociálních následků dlouhodobé nezaměstnanosti pro postižené rodiny a pro celé vesnické společenství v Marienthalu. Studie známá jako „Marienthal“ se stala „klasickou“ četbou generací studentů sociologie a odvolávají se na ni jak odborníci zabývající se otázkami nezaměstnanosti, tak i sociologové studující rodinu a také zastánci měření v sociologii vyznávající kvalitativní výzkumné metody. Míru vlivu této knihy na rakouské prostředí dokládají přehledové studie nezaměstnanosti ukazující, že právě Rakousko má jednu z nejnižších úrovní nezaměstnanosti (4 %).
