As a girl, Sheila never let her gradual descent into blindness prevent her from trying to do everything a sighted person could do. Then, at 17, she found herself dreading her future in an 'ever darkening vacuum'. But then Emma - a chocolate Labrador - enters her life, and Sheila begins a journey of independence, love and happiness.
The author, her sight restored by an operation, describes her life with her now retired guide dog, Emma, and her other chocolate brown Labradors.
Anecdotes of Sheila Hocken and her five dogs which recalls events when a sixth dog, Elsa, comes to live with them and just doesn't fit in. She causes havoc and eventually goes off to a new home where she settles down well.
Román anglickej spisovateľky je vyrozprávaním vlastného životného príbehu. Príbehu dieťaťa, dievčaťa, neskôr ženy – slepej. Román sa začína zvláštnym detstvom malej Sheily, ktorá postupne stráca zrak a svet vníma akoby zatiahnutý hustou hmlou. Napriek tejto skutočnosti si Sheila nachádza miesto v spoločnosti, vďaka slepeckému psovi Eme. Ema čiastočne nahrádzala Sheile zrak a orientačný zmysel, no zároveň sa stala jej nerozlučnou priateľkou a družkou a pomáhala jej proti citovému odcudzeniu, otupenosti a zanevreniu na život.
