Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Steichen, and Paul Strand are iconic photographers of the 20th century, and this volume presents the Metropolitan Museum’s exceptional collection of their works for the first time. Stieglitz, a fervent supporter of photography and modern art through his “Little Galleries of the Photo-Secession” and the journal Camera Work, was also an accomplished photographer. His contributions include portraits, landscapes, city views, and cloud studies, featuring a composite portrait of Georgia O’Keeffe, selected by her for the Museum. Steichen, renowned for his fashion photography and celebrity portraits, collaborated with Stieglitz and exemplified Photo-Secessionist photography. His notable works include three large variant prints of The Flatiron and moonlit photographs of Rodin’s Balzac. The final double issue of Camera Work, devoted to Paul Strand, marked a significant shift in photography. Strand’s images from 1915 and 1916 explored themes of movement, abstraction, and street portraits, transitioning from the soft-focus Pictorialist style to a more modern, graphic approach. This collection features Strand’s rare large platinum prints, many unique exhibition pieces. The photographs showcased are among the Metropolitan’s most treasured holdings.
