This lavishly illustrated catalogue introduces one of Asia's richest yet least known artistic traditions through artworks from Thailand and Burma. Focusing on decorative and religious objects from the nineteenth century, along with earlier and later works, it highlights the dynamic, often strained relationship between central and northern Thailand (Siam) and Burma. Despite their similar size and cultural features, these neighboring countries have historically been adversaries. The book delves into the elements that both unite and divide them. Featuring incisive essays by leading scholars and detailed entries on nearly 150 spectacular works of art, many of which have never been publicly displayed in the West, it was showcased at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco from October 23, 2009, to January 10, 2010. While representing the latest art historical research, the book is accessible to the general public. It will captivate anyone interested in exquisite artworks like gilded ritual vessels, black lacquer furniture inlaid with mother-of-pearl, and vibrant paintings. These objects evoke the exotic ambiance reminiscent of romantic travel narratives, transporting viewers to a unique and enchanting time and place.

This collection of Chinese landscape paintings profiles the work of prolific artist, Li Huayi—one of the most influential Chinese painters of the 20th century. Some view contemporary art and traditional art as alien entities facing each other across an unbridgeable divide. But what does it mean to be a "contemporary artist"? Is it possible to be contemporary while working in a traditional manner? These questions as they relate to the contemporary scene in China are explored in this catalogue of a special exhibition featuring 34 large-scale paintings by Li Huayi, an artist born and raised in China, and currently residing in Shanghai and San Francisco. Many of the works in this exhibition could, on first view, be mistaken for traditional Chinese paintings such as those from the Northern Song dynasty (960-1126). On closer inspection, however, the viewer discovers the technical innovations and personal expression that the artist has brought to this tradition. For Li Huayi is expressly not an artist who is seeking to imitate or reproduce works from the past but rather one who uses tradition to create new works that speak to our time.
