Madeira holds a documentary legacy of rare significance in the panorama of the History of Photography in Europe, as a result of the activity of several photographers, professionals and amateurs. This archival heritage is a unique and multifaceted source of knowledge regarding Madeira in the 19th and 20th centuries, in its internal dynamics and relationship with the outside world. The collection Madeira - Photographic Memories (Madeira - Memórias Fotográficas), comprised of carefully and beautifully designed catalogues, seeks to present significant portions of this heritage, and, at the same time, to provide photographic albums of history.
